benzos & surgery

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Jun 21, 2002 3:05 pm

Dr.,

If a person is taking a daily regimen of a benzodiazepine, and they need to have surgery, (elective or emergency), does the fact that that they are using a CNS depressant impact the use of general anesthesia? And if so, how is this situation handled?

Thanks as always.

An anesthesiologist could give a definitive response. My understanding is that the influence of a benzo is relatively trivial in terms of the approach to anesthesia in almost all cases. Usually, the person takes their regular medication with just a sip of water on the morning of surgery. If you are going to have surgery, you will meet with an anesthesiologist who will clarify the process in your hospital.
