Benzos and depression

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Jul 05, 2002 4:15 pm

Dr.,

I have two questions regarding depression and Benzos:

1. I have seen a number of references suggesting a link between Xanax/Klonopin and depression. Is it true that either of these drugs can cause depression? And if so, is it physiological depression or is it depressive-like symptoms that are side effects (sedation, lethargy)?

2. On the other hand, I seen references suggesting that Xanax in higher doses has had some positive effects on depression and may have been initially intended to be marketed as having anti-depressant properties. Any truth to this (seems to contradict statements above)?

Thanks as always.

There are case reports and people who believe both propositions. Different people as the propositions seem to be mutually exclusive. There is really no decent research documenting either statement. In my mind there is little to no truth to either statement. If you are less anxious, you might feel somewhat relieved. Also, if you are oversedated, you might feel worse. These are both non specific effects that I believe have been misinterpreted as more related to mood than a mild influence on mood.
