distinguishing between anxiety types

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu May 30, 2002 5:51 pm

Dr.,

Thanks for your help on anticipatory anxiety I have one final question on this topic:

What is the distinction between anticipatory anxiety and panic symptoms that do not evolve into full blown attacks?

I don't suffer from the full blown attacks, however, today for example I suffered symptoms of panic that stopped short of "full attacks" but were extremely uncomfortable and plagued me throughout the day. Of course, it did not help that my wife delivered our first child today. But I was distressed that much of my joy was overshadowed by these symptoms. This is the type of anxiety my therapist terms "anticipatory" but I worry that it is really untreated panic. How can I tell the difference?

Thanks as always. This is the last question I will ask on the topic.

Congratulations on the birth of your child.

It is hard to tell and sometimes impossible to tell. Try and distract yourself. Try and enjoy yourself.
