fear and worry

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Aug 11, 2002 6:52 pm

I'm 14 years old and all my life i've been having these fears of bad things happening that probably cannot happen to me. When I was 10 or 11 I started to have these fears very strongly. To deter the feeling I would do little things like step over cracks with a certain foot or make little crosses on my forehead so the "bad thing" wouldn't occur. If i didn't do these little things the fear would return and I would obsess over it. Even if i tried not to do my "little things" to suppress the fear, I would still feel it because i would never know if the bad thing could actually happen because it was something so ridculous. For awhile I stopped believing in it and I thought it went away, but now it seems as if it is comming back. I can still function pretty normally, but not in my own mind, the fear is just overwhelming and it is becoming a problem. What can I do to control it?

OCD can start in childhood and adolecense with symptoms like you describe. You can read about it at this site and others. Some people recommend doing the things that make you anxious until the anxiety fades: this is called "exposure with response prevention". You could read about this treatment. Medication can be helpful. You would need to tell your parents so they could have you meet with a professional.
