Onset of Xanax vs. Klonopin

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Jul 02, 2002 4:04 pm

Dr.,

My Uncle uses Xanax occasionally for anxiety When I told him I switched to Klonopin for occasional use because it lasts longer, he asked his Dr. about switching. She told him to stick with the Xanax, he only uses it a couple of times a week at most, so she felt there was no threat, and she also told him Klonopin may last longer, but also takes longer to kick in, and so it would be less helpful for him. I have heard this comment before, that Klonopin is slower acting.

My own personal experience seems to be that I could feel it when the Xanax kicked in after anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours(but it could be the side effects of sedation I felt), and Klonopin seems to be more subtle, I get sleepy first, then anxiety gradually reduces over a few hours (usually 2 or 3). I asked my own Dr.. He disagreed with my Uncle's, and said the only real difference was the duration of action, onset time was basically the same.

Which one is right?

Thanks as always.

Xanax is more lipophillic and will probably start to work a tiny bit faster. We are talking very, very minor differences on the front end.
