Paxil CR vs. original formula

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Sep 13, 2002 1:39 pm

Dr.,

What is the difference between Paxil CR and the original formula? GSK claims a lower dropout rate, but the numbers posted in the inserts for the 2 are roughly the same regarding side effect incidence (except headache, which is even high in the CR insert (27% compared to 17% in the original formula insert). Half-life is the same based on the inserts, but the rate of absorption seems to be a little slower. Is this supposed to correspond with less severe side effects (as mentioned above, there appears to be no difference in incidence)?

I really can't see any difference between these drugs - do you?

Thanks as always.

As of now, I see nothing that makes much difference between the formulas. The new pill is going to be the same price or cheaper. The drug company will extend its patent. I have not as yet recommended that any of my patients on Paxil switch to the new agent.
