SSRIs and Memory Loss?

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Jul 15, 2002 9:05 pm

Dr.,

I have noticed ove the past couple of months that my memory seems to be diminished. It certainly was before I started to improve on medication, the anxiety and preoccupation with it certainly affected my memory. I am very much improved now, but my memory seems almost worse, yet my thoughts are much clearer and focused.

I know certain medications can cause memory problems, but am not aware of such a problem with Celexa or other SSRIs. Are you aware of such a relationship?

Either way I'll take some short-term memory problems over Panic Disorder any day of the week, or maybe my memory isn't worse, but since my thought process is clearer, I wasn't aware just how bad my memory was before treatment.

Thanks as always.

While I am not aware of any studies documenting memory problems with the SSRIs, I have had other patients complain of the same problems. I frequently recommend non specific Rx such as Omega 3 fatty fish oil or ginko.
