Treatment for GAD

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Aug 16, 2002 2:01 pm

Hi there, I have an anxiety disorder, which mostly involves phobias and constant worrying. This has just recently been getting worse, where I don't even want to go hiking anymore for fears of bears, cougars, and others. My doctor recommended taking Celexa at a low dose, but I am very nervous about taking this, as I had a terrible experience coming off Effexor (although was tapered off it) and do not want to go through that again. Do you have any suggestions for a good form of treatment for this? Or a medication that might have the least amount of side effects? Any comments on Celexa? Thank you, any comments would be appreciated. Kathryn

Low dose benzodiazepines or SSRI medications are the mainstays of a medication approach. Celexa is as good as the next medication with no glaring faults. "Exposure with response preventions" is the main behavioral technique that has proved to be efficacious. Read our section on GAD and Panic for more ideas.
