Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Jun 11, 2001 2:35 pm

can involuntary, rapid tics and tremors in the muscles surrounding the eye be the result of stress or anxiety? if so, how can i address/treat it? my left eye has been twitching maddeningly for months now and i don't have a clue how to make it stop.

Most people believe that tics can be a sign of stress. I am in the minority. I do not think that tics around one eye necessarily means anxiety. I would first seek medical consultation to rule out organic causes of tics. Tics can be treated with both dopamine blocking agents such as haloperidal and risperidone (and many others) but these have powerful side effects. Some MD's use anti anxiety drugs such as the benzodiazepines (Valium, Klonopin and others) or other agents with less research on efficacy. In general, I would be sure that it was not viral or neuromuscular before chalking it up to anxiety. On a reassuring note, Dr. Norman Geschwind (world famous neurologist) once told me that he never saw a serious neurological condition that had eye twitch as its only sign.
