Unmasking other disorders

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Aug 15, 2002 8:28 am

I know that benzo's are not supposed to be given to people with psychotic disorders. What if a person who had an underlying condition that has not yet been diagnosed was given bezo's. Would the meds bring out or unmask the underlying disorder, like bipolar or schizophrenia?

Can meds like benzo's be used to confirm a suspected diagnosis by the way a patient reacts to the drug?

Benzo's may be used in people with psychotic disorder just should not be the primary agent. The response to medication would usually not tell you much in this particular instance. Sometimes medication response, say Lithium in Bipolar Disorder gives confirmatory evidence of the diagnosis, but this is the exception and not the rule.
