Why not Remeron?

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Jul 16, 2002 10:08 am

Dr.,

When I was given Celexa and was having trouble with it, I looked into Remeron. The manufacturer published so many studies showing its equivalency of effectiveness and possibly faster onset, with much less sexual sides or insomnia (of course, such manufacturer reported studies would be expected to report well). Even a few other studies I saw suggested it was at least as efficacious as the SSRIs. Yet it seems to be in such rare use, and never a first choice. I am curious as to why that is.

I know there is a problem with initial sedation and weight gain, but the discontinuation rates seem comparable to SSRIs, so I imagine the sedation generally wears off or is as tolerable as the SSRI side effects(of course, Organon shows studies that after the first week sedation is gone, and is very vague about the weight gain)and weight gain is usually manageable.

Given what I have read, I would expect its level of prescription to be in line with the SSRIs, yet it captures so little of the market. Any insight into possible reasons for why it is used so little?

Thanks as always.

The weight gain can be substantial. No one wants this as a side effect.
