Xanax Side- Effect??

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue May 21, 2002 12:44 pm

Hello,

I am a 29 year old male. I developed tinnitus a few months ago. A couple of weeks later, I came to the realization that the noise was probably never going to go away (what my Family Doc told me). The next day I had a panic attack while researching tinnitus on the internet. This was my first such experience. I promptly visited my Dr. who prescribed .5 mg of Xanax as needed and before bedtime to help me sleep.

I have been taking .5 mg for a few months now. In the first couple of weeks I noticed no side-effects (excpet stomach distress which is normal for me when trying new drugs). Lately I have had some wierd happenings that I am concerned about. Occasionally my fingers and toes will start tingling for no reason. I still have full strength, and it is not total numbness. It goes away within 15 minutes usually and has never lasted more than 30 minutes. I asked my doctor about it and he said it was probably just nervousness and not related to Xanax.
More recently, I have had some strange sensations in my tongue. It feels like my tongue is too big for my mouth, but I can look at my tongue in the mirror and tell that it is normal. I have waken from sleep a few times noticing that I am pushing hard with my tongue against my front teeth. A doctor has told me that my tinnitus may be related to TMJ becasue I have some problems with bruxism. Could it be that TMJ is causing my tongue issues or is it likely caused by Xanax? I should note that I don't walk around fighting the urge of poking my tongue out, since I have read that is another disorder altogether. I hope that I can continue taking Xanax because that is the only way I can sleep through my tinnitus!
Please give me your thoughts. Thank you!

Basically, I agree with your doctor. The sort of experiences you describe are certainly not typical side effects from Xanax and I have not heard of any side effects like those from others on the medication.
