What types of birth defects can Lithium cause? I have been searching all over the inter net and I have had no luck. I do not see my Dr. for another week and it is just killing me!

Most medication birth defects are caused by use of medication in the first trimester. The fetus is walled off for about the first two weeks, but then shares a blood supply with the mother. The risks of birth defects with Lithium are low probably in the range of 1 in 200. The most serious defect from Lithium is a heart defect known as Ebstein's anamoly. The risk from the anti convulsants such as Depakote to cause neural tube defects is worse. The risk most of the newer agents such as Zyprexa or Lamictal are essentially unknown. Their may also be a risk of no medication as a psychotic episode can lead to poor nutrition, dangerous behavior with consequences on the fetus. The risk of an episode in the first few weeks after delivery are high in the Bipolar mother and medication at that time may prevent severe conseaquences.
