depression and alcoholism in my family

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 03, 2001 12:12 pm

All right, I'm 16. My mom just recently admitted to being an alcoholic, though I suspected it all along. She's never been a violent while drinking at all, in fact I've only seen her drunk about 4 times in my life. A few months ago, she in a mental hospital because she suicdal. 2 days after she went into hospital, I found out two of my very good friends cut mselves. My moms out of hospital isn't drinking, at least one of my friends has been getting better. now I'm worried about myself. In all, I've just been very very depressed past few months, depression running in my family all badness around me, I'm afraid something could happen to me. Or am I just having a dumb teenage mood swing? re's no where I can turn.

There are places to turn. You just need to be motivated. We cannot make accurate diagnosis over the web. I will say that if the mood continues to persist for over a few months when things are improving otherwise, it could very well be depression. You really should ask to see someone who has experience with sixteen year olds in similar situations to help with the evaluation. Every one is different. While you are at risk for depression or substance abuse, it is not pre ordained. Also, the course of illness varies tremendously within families, so you are not destined to repeat your parents' lives. The fact that you are wondering about this issue is significant as it means you are motivated to change. Good Luck.
