My face

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Jun 19, 2002 11:57 am

Dear doc,
Since the disease began my face has become contorted. My lips droop from the edges and I feel much comfortable by keeping it this way. My family tells me to stop doing it. Now I can’t help it. I feel more comfortable this way. Why is this so? Is it because of the strain?

When people are depressed, their expressions may change to "look depressed". I (and no one) really knows why. It probably has to do with very primitive internal wiring in our brains that is used to express feelings non verbally. When we look at someone we think we can tell their mood and we are usually (but not invariably) right. Humans must have evolved this non verbal code to communicate. Other animals also do so.
