post-viral depression

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Aug 25, 2002 5:44 pm

Eighteen months ago I had a terrible upper respiratory virus which left me dizzy for several months. As the virus wore on, I became increasingly anxious and eventually, I became severely depressed. Although I have tried several AD's, none has helped to lift me out of what feels like a biochemically based depression

I am 46, have had no preveious hx. of depression and before this horrible virus hit, I was enjoying a full, happy, and satisfying life. Although my will and mind are still strong, I am unable to access any joy whatsoever.

Any hope you can offer will be appreciated.

Although there is no research to back up this advice, in my own clinical practice I have found the more activating agents to be useful in this type of situation. This includes buproprion, desipramine, venlafaxine and phenelzine. The last is a MAO inhibitor and does have a lot of interactions with other agents. Excercise also helps. Good luck.
