Self Harm

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Apr 06, 2002 8:20 pm

HI, em I'm 16 and I'v been a cutter for about 4/5 years now. I seem to be doing it every day now and sometimes for stupid reasons like being bored or even if I'm really happy about something I have to have some mark on my to express this.
I'v tried so many other ways to express myself I write poetry/songs, i keep a diary, i paint etc. nothing seems to be enough though.
Quite a few friends know about it. One friend also does it but we don't talk about it. My other good friend worries all the time and tells to me talk to her whenever I feel the urge. But she doesn't understand I can't talk about it. I can't talk about my problems or how I feel, I just can't find the words.
What is it? Am I depressed?

thanx

Habitual cutting is not well understood. People who cut themselves do not describe pain, but a sense of relaxation or well being. It tends to become almost addictive. Like other addictions, the addict will lie to cover his or her behavior and not be discovered. Cutting never really solves any problem and causes a lot of problems. It temporarily makes someone feel better while making their life worse. This is similar to other addictions. It is associated with depression and poor self esteem, but not all people who cut suffer from either. Your quote is interesting. I would not try to hide it from your parents or other significant people so that you can acknowlege the need for professional help.
