Self-psychotherapy

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri May 10, 2002 3:22 am

Dear doctor,
I am a psychologist undergoing unipolar primary depression. I initially had full-blown symptoms of depression I had anorexia, dyspepsia, flatulence, bloating, retching, mood emptiness, burning sensations in stomach, cognitive disability, feeling of head undergoing rotation, belching, some obsessive symptoms and aerophagy.
Now eight months later I am much better. I am sleeping better and eating well. The symptoms of bloating and retching have gone along with the feeling of going crazy However, I still cannot derive pleasure out of life, but generally the symptoms of profuse crying and suicidal ideation are on the receding end. Their still is some amount of aerophagy. I still can feel some pressure headaches, only very slight problems with the memory and finding the right words.
I was unable to take medication because of side effects. I have used self-psychotherapy as a tool to get over the very difficult times. In this method I made cuttings out of the common instructions we give to the patients to meet the challenge of depression on day to day basis. I revised these on a daily basis. This has kept me going so far. It has been quite effective. Because I am not on any medication and have improved albeit some symptoms should I continue like this?

It sounds as if what you are doing is of some help. Traditional therapies such as medication or seeing someone else might also help. I can't advise you on what to do. It is a matter of how symptomatic you are and how motivated you are.
