Your assesment please

Dear doc,
I was hale and hearty individual at forty. I was living with my two kids and my wife in our comfortable house. Some six weeks back I left to give a viva voce examination to another city, when my troubles began. There was a one-week refresher course before the examination, which I attended and I noticed a change. I was a quite jovial and cracked a lot of jokes on the course. After the course I had another week before the examination and I began my studies in isolation. Just two days before the examination I developed this notion that I should go back and not give the examination. I developed retching on waking up in the morning and I accounted it for the anxiety that I had developed for the examination. I tried to suppress this urge and went ahead to give this examination. On the day of the examination I developed severe palpitations which lasted throughout the one-hour duration of the examination. I was quite surprised as to how my body was reacting as I had appeared in many such examinations and never reacted this way. Now my body was responding in a totally different way. The retching continued on even after the examination and within a week I was a changed individual. I could not figure out what was happening till the end of the second week when I became aware that I was undergoing depression Now six weeks later the retching has gone but I am still under depression At first I had early morning wakening and also eating difficulties. Now all these have gone only general displeasure is left.

I wonder whether you had a panic attack and anxiety or quite possibly a physical illness that you associated to the exam. I would try and continue to give exams until the response goes away (Exposure to the noxious stimulus with "Response Prevention". If you are unable, then medication might help.
