Let's say you broke into your neighbor's house because you knew he was on vacation. Your intention was to just live there for a day and sleep overnight. You were wearing a shirt, pants (with your car keys in pocket), and shoes.

The next morning you left the neighbor's house.

Question:

Should you now feel guilty about keeping your car keys or your car?

My reasoning:

Since you spent the night in neighbor's house, it was, in effect, protecting your belongings from getting stolen (your car keys, pants, shirt, shoes) in case a thief was around because if house was not there, you would be lying outside at night. So now, your wrongdoing (sleeping in neighbor's house) has kept your belongings safe. Otherwise a thief could have stolen your car keys and clothes and driven off in your car.

I would like to hear your views on this.

Thanks.
